Burning Barn's Favourite Mixer Brands

Here at Burning Barn we wanted to create a rum that packed a whole load of flavour, making it a true pleasure to drink straight but also makes is great for mixing. This has long been the logic behind our rallying cry of: ‘if only ¼ of your drink is the bit you’re paying for – taste it’ and taste it you shall – our rum is designed to be mixed. Authentic, bold, punchy flavours that will burst through and compliment your favourite mixer. But what are the best mixers to bring these flavours to life? Fear not, we’ve got you covered.

Mixers have come a long way in the last two decades and before we begin on our favourite mixers we have to raise our hats to the brand that was at the forefront of the mixer revolution and transformed the way we think about mixing, FeverTree.

From humble beginnings back in 2004 the brand has been on a meteoric rise ever since, promoting the ethos that the growing number on premium spirits deserved a premium mixer to match. With their increasing popularity arose a new appreciation for the fact that mixing is not a crime, rather, with the right mixer you can experience a whole new side to your favourite spirit. So now to introduce you to a selection of our favourite mixers, which we’ve chosen both for their incredible taste and also the great ethos behind their brand.

Square Root Ginger Beer

In 2012 Ed + Robyn started making Square Root Sodas, selling them at their local farmers market. They then enlisted the help of a 1920's delivery Tricycle, Elsie, and began peddling the sodas around town.

The Square Root recipe was THE very first made, to sell at local farmers' markets, and Square Root are still very proud of its natural heat and rich, well-rounded flavour. They press root ginger for a bright, clean taste and steep what’s left to release the natural spicy flavours. Then they add freshly squeezed lemon juice, and blend with four different types of dark and light sugars to give a complex and unique flavour. It's still got less sugar than most of it's kind!

The Perfect Serve: BB Smoked Rum and Square Root Ginger Beer. The Dark and Smoky. Fantastic for autumn and winter but the bright zesty lime and rum make it equally perfect as a summer serve.

 Karma Cola

If you’re looking for an ethical brand to support, it doesn’t get much better than this. Karma Cola was founded on the principle that what you drink should not only taste good, it should be good for the land, good for the people who grow the ingredients and good for you. The brand was first set up back in 2010, with the first bottles of Karma Cola being made from a bag of cola nuts sent to the founders by their friends in Boma, a small village in Sierra Leone.

When the founders realised how little of the profit was fed back into the communities that harvested the cola nuts, they decided to create Karma Cola – with the intent to change this. So not only does Karma Cola taste bloomin’ fantastic but when you’re buying a bottle you’re also supporting The Karma Cola Foundation which gives cola farmers and their families’ independence through trade and supports projects to develop infrastructure and education.

The Perfect Serve: Spiced Rum and Karma Cola. The caramel and herbal notes of the cola combine brilliantly with the fiery ginger and aromatics in our rum to make a game changer of a drink.

The London Essence

For the crème de la crème of mixers look no further. Founded back in 1896, The London Essence prides itself on crafting luxurious drinks from the purest flavours - selecting the finest botanicals and gently distilling them to capture their true essence. Their mixers deliver carefully calibrated taste profiles to accentuate premium spirits and use the science of distillation to achieve an unmatched depth of flavour and complexity.

The Perfect Serve: Honey Rum and Rhubarb and Cardamom Soda. Summer in a glass. Add loads of ice and a thick slice of Sicilian lemon. Unbelievably good.

This is only a small selection of mixers and there are plenty of other fantastic mixer brands out there to try, if you’ve got one to recommend we’d love to hear it. If you fancy getting your hands on a selection of these mixers, along with two bottle of BBR we’ve got just the thing.
